Up for sale is a rare vintage Seiko 5 Sportsmatic 6619-7990 men’s automatic dress sports watch, produced for the Japan Domestic Market (JDM) in the 1960s. The Sportsmatic line played an important role in the development of Seiko’s early automatic watches and remains highly regarded among collectors for its reliability, classic styling, and historical significance. This example features a clean silver linen-textured dial with applied markers and a day-date display. The watch is in full working condition and is running and holding accurate time over a 24 hour period. All parts of the watch are original with the exception of the aftermarket stainless steel bracelet. The watch is in good vintage physical condition with signs of use and age. Seiko begins with Kintaro Hattori, who opened a shop selling and repairing clocks in Tokyo's Ginza district in 1881, at the age of twenty-one. He founded the Seikosha factory in 1892 to manufacture wall clocks, built Japan's first wristwatch, the Laurel, in 1913, and put the Seiko name on a dial for the first time in 1924. By mid-century his successors ran one of the most vertically integrated watch companies on earth, making everything from hairsprings to cases under its own roof.
