► SELLER'S DESCRIPTION
Up for sale is a beautifully preserved vintage Elgin men’s wristwatch, featuring a 10K gold-filled case and a clean, utilitarian military-style dial. This handsome design reflects the restrained, functional elegance of 1930s American watchmaking, with bold Arabic numerals, a red sweep seconds hand, and a timeless aesthetic rooted in the pre-war era of precision timekeeping. The watch is powered by an Elgin manual wind movement (Caliber 539), which is running well and keeping accurate time. The inner case back is properly signed Elgin National Watch Co. U.S.A., confirming its authenticity and quality craftsmanship. The watch is fitted with a brand new black leather strap, which pairs nicely with the warm tone of the gold-filled case. Overall physical condition is very good, showing only light signs of age while retaining an attractive, honest patina consistent with a well-preserved 1930s timepiece. ► ARCHIVE FILE: ELGIN — BRAND HISTORY

Elgin was founded in 1864 as the National Watch Company, when a group of Chicago investors led by former mayor Benjamin W. Raymond set out to beat Waltham at industrialized watchmaking. They raised the money, persuaded the town of Elgin, Illinois to donate land beside the Fox River, and hired away seven of Waltham's best men to design the machinery. The first movement, a railroad-grade pocket watch named the B.W. Raymond in the mayor's honor, was completed in 1867, and the firm took the name Elgin National Watch Company in 1874.
